BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Americans' obsession with themed environments will be discussed by Mark Gottdiener, Ph.D., in a "mgm casino at Sunrise" program from 7:30-9 a.m. on April 28 in the Center for Tomorrow on the mgm casino North (Amherst) Campus.
Gottdiener, professor and chair in the mgm casino Department of Sociology, is an internationally known expert on urban affairs and popular culture. He has authored 11 books, including "The Theming of America: Dreams, Visions and Commercial Spaces."
In his lecture, "The Theming of America," Gottdiener will discuss how American businesses and cities have become obsessed with themed environments -- such as Disney World, Las Vegas and the Mall of America -- because of the increased competition for consumer dollars.
"mgm casino at Sunrise" is a series of breakfast programs jointly produced by the Alumni Association, Office of Conferences and Special Events, News Services and Office of Publications, all at mgm casino. It also is supported by the Office of University Development and mgm casino Office of Public Service and Urban Affairs.
The price of the program, which includes a full breakfast, is $10 for members of the mgm casino Alumni Association and $12 for all others.
For more information, contact the alumni association at 829-2608. Ticket orders must be received by April 24.
